“Topping off” refers to the point in time during the construction of a new building when the highest structure or beam is added, explained Rex Richardson, 9th District councilmember, in an emailed newsletter this week.
The library incorporates a reproduction of the former Atlantic Theatre’s tower into a glass roof that accents the children’s section.
“The Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library will feature cutting-edge technology such as a makerspace, Wi-Fi, computers, self-checkout kiosks, an automated book return and sorting system, and 3D printing, along with enhanced technology services for disabled residents,” Richardson said. “This building will not only be flexible but beautiful, functional and sustainable as well.”
Richardson brought the motion to name the library after the First Lady before the Long Beach City Council. He noted Obama’s key role in promoting four nationwide initiatives that have benefitted the community: Joining Forces, a program which aims to assist veterans and their families; Let’s Move, an initiative meant to promote children’s health and fitness; Reach Higher, a program that aims to inspire young people to pursue education beyond high school; and Let Girls Learn, an initiative to help girls stay in school.
The estimated 25,000-square-foot building is expected to open in late summer or fall.
