Miller Hospital teaming with Kohl’s to keep kids safe

Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach (MCHLB) has teamed up with Kohl’s department stores for an ongoing childhood safety initiative to help prevent accidents that result in many serious injuries and hospitalizations.
The “Keeping Kids Safe with Kohl’s” program at MCHLB provides education to children and parents on passenger, bicycle and pedestrian safety. One-hundred percent of net profits from Kohl’s Cares for Kids plush animals, books and CDs purchased at 14 local Kohl’s stores will benefit safety programs at MCHLB. All proceeds will help purchase car seats and helmets for MCHLB patients and families and help raise awareness of the importance of childhood safety.
California law requires that anyone under age 18 wear an approved helmet when riding a bicycle. Many children ride bicycles, skateboards or scooters without the appropriate helmet, and a fall to the ground can be life changing. Children should always wear helmets that bear a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSQ) label, which certifies that it meets or exceeds the safety standards.
Car accidents are the leading cause of death and disability for children between the ages of 1 and 15 years old. Children need to be in the correct car seat for their age and weight. It is the law that children must be restrained correctly in a child seat or booster seat until they are at least 6 years old or weigh 60 pounds. All children ages 12 and younger should sit in the back seat and be properly restrained at all times.
The 14 participating Kohl’s stores with Kohl’s Cares for Kids merchandise benefiting Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach include Buena Park, Huntington Beach, Mira Loma, Westchester, Menifee, Huntington, Cypress, Cerritos, Torrance, Lakewood, Seal Beach, Downey, Redondo Beach and Whittier. This season’s merchandise features Dr. Seuss books and plush toys.
