MoLAA exhibit to explore art's restorative power

In celebration of the Museum of Latin-American Art’s (MoLAA) 20th anniversary, its new Port to Learning Gallery will present Artful Healing, an exhibition that explores the restorative power of art.
Based on the belief of MoLAA’s founder, Dr. Robert Gumbiner, that art has the ability to heal the body and elevate the soul, Artful Healing focuses on works created by artists confronting physical, emotional or social challenges, as well as work created directly as part of a rehabilitation process.
Organized by young guest curators recruited from local high schools and nonprofit organizations, the exhibit features local artists as well as pieces from MoLAA’s permanent collection.
The opening reception on Sunday, April 10 from 1pm to 4pm will include opportunities to meet the artists and curators, as well as gallery tours and workshops.
Attendees may participate in an interactive coloring of a drawing by artist Emily Kiwa Tanaka in the lobby during the reception. Docents will offer tours from 2pm to 3pm. From 2pm to 4pm in the sculpture garden, there will be a dance workshop with live drumming led by Arts & Services for Disabled. From 3pm to 4pm, there will be a curator question-and-answer session in the Balboa Room.
