MoLAA’s museum director leaves to pursue lecture, writing careers

Museum Director Gregorio Luke’s resignation from the Museum of Latin American Art (MoLAA) became effective earlier this month.
As his reasons for departure Luke cited his desire to lecture full-time and write. He intends to lecture both nationally and internationally as well as write a book. He did note, however, that he still plans to maintain a close relationship with the museum.
Luke joined the MoLAA in 1999 and was instrumental in creating various educational programs and special events. He also lectured on a range of topics from Ernest Hemmingway to Mexican cinema.
Luke was the First Secretary in the Embassy of Mexico in Washington, DC, where he was a founding member of the Mexican Cultural Institute. Before joining the museum, he was the cultural attaché at the Consulate of Mexico in Los Angeles.
As part of the senior staff, he helped oversee a period of extensive growth and expansion of MoLAA and described this time as “among the most rewarding in my life. I enjoyed great freedom to try new things and the joy of witnessing the birth and growth of an institution.”
This growth culminated in the June grand opening of the newly expanded Museum of Latin American Art.
In his closing statement, Luke said he knows the museum will “fulfill its promise of becoming the best and most beautiful museum of Latin American Art in the world.”
MoLAA’s mission is to educate the public about contemporary Latin American fine art through the presentation of a significant permanent collection, dynamic exhibitions and related cultural and educational programs.
