As community action group Wrigley Moms reaches its first anniversary, the growing crew of Long Beach mothers is seeking to improve the community for not only their families, but everyone else’s too.
Wrigley Moms is an extension of Long Beach Little Ones, an organization bringing together families with small children. First starting as an unofficial neighborhood watch of local moms, the women of western Long Beach soon broke out into their own group.
“We wanted to have more connection with local moms,” said member Wendy Wood, who brings her daughter Taylor and has another baby on the way.
The group consists of 42 moms and 43 kids ranging from 2 months to 2 years, though the majority of the children are about 18 months old. The women live throughout Wrigley, Bixby Knolls, California Heights, Virginia Country Club, and other parts of Western Long Beach.
Their work consists of discussing community issues and making Long Beach a better place to live in. But Wrigley Moms isn’t just play dates and their weekly Stroller Walk every Monday morning at Los Cerritos Park; they make a conscious effort to get involved in the community too.
Some of the service projects Wrigley Moms participated in are Operation Easter Basket for the underserved children of Long Beach and, later on in the year, the group will organize a toy drive for Aspira Foster & Family Services
Though Wrigley Moms do have monthly meetings and regular activities, there are no official rules or guidelines for the group.
“You just need to have a kid or one on the way,” said Wood. “And to become a member [of Wrigley Moms] all you have to do is fill out a profile on Yahoo! and you will be approved.”
