The Art Exchange Visual Art Center will again offer a summer art camp for kids between the ages of 7 and 12, guiding them into the world of visual art through hands-on experiences in a variety of visual art media. The Art Exchange is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to support working artists and arts education through the development of a world-class visual-art center reflecting the rich cultural heritage of our community.
Two sessions will be offered: session one will last from July 9 to July 20, from 9am to 3pm, Monday through Friday; and session two will be offered from July 30 to Aug. 10 from 9am to 3pm, Monday through Friday. Extended hours of supervision available from 3:00—5:30pm at a rate of $5 per hour.
The program was designed by local master artists Gregory Navarro Pickens and Stephen Elicker, and it will include working with clay, origami, charcoal and pastel drawing, printmaking, and painting. The program will allow young artists to keep a daily journal of their ideas and designs and the opportunity to create art at their own pace and skill level. Participants will be encouraged to explore, experiment, and discover their own approaches to art-making with carefully guided instruction.
Each session will culminate in an exhibition and reception where participants receive certificates of completion and an “artistic license” photo ID. For information, visit artexchangelb.org or contact Pickens at gregory.navarro@artexchangelb.org .
Camps are held at the ArtExchange’s Art Lab in the Expo Art Center, 4321 Atlantic Ave., in Bixby Knolls. The cost for each two-week session is $280 and includes all materials. Some scholarships are available. Last year, the program was funded in part by The Arts Council for Long Beach and L.A. County Supervisor Don Knabe. The ArtExchange is currently seeking funding through these and other venues for camp scholarships.
