Nutrition classes help beginning to advanced at CHLB

Community Hospital of Long Beach’s (CHLB) nutrition program announces its Session 5 schedule of classes. Returning this session are the family/children nutrition classes for children six to 12 years of age. All of the nutrition counseling and classes are taking place on the CHLB campus, 1720 Termino Avenue in Long Beach, and are provided free of charge through the UniHealth Foundation.
The Session 5 nutrition class is a six-month, once-a-week series that begins on Monday, Jan. 21 and runs through Jun. 13. The counseling and classes are offered Mondays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to noon and 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and noon to 1 p.m.
Some of the topics to be covered in Session 5 include: nutrition labels, my pyramid, heart health/diet and cholesterol, DASH diet, tips for eating out and diet and cancer. The family/children nutrition classes are also offered once a week for six months and begin on Monday, Jan. 21 as well as a “Nutrition 101″ program.
All classes are open to CHLB employees and members of the local community and are conducted by nutrition/dietitian students from Cal State University, Long Beach (CSULB) and are overseen by registered dietitians from both CSULB and CHLB. Prior to beginning the CHLB nutrition program, participants must schedule an assessment or intake appointment with one of the nutrition counselors.
Assessments begin Thursdays, Jan. 10 and 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Fridays, Jan. 11 and 18 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 12 from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
