Legislation by 70th Assembly District Assemblymember Patrick O’Donnell (D-Long Beach) establishing the California College Promise cleared the Assembly Committee on Higher Education on April 19.
AB 2681 incentivizes community college and school districts to develop pathways to ensure college readiness and increase college completion rates.
Through the partnerships created in the bill, community college and school districts will work together to offer more college-preparatory courses for high school students.
In doing so, AB 2681 will also prevent some students from having to take remediation classes upon entering college thereby shortening their time to completion, according to O’Donnell’s office.
“The Long Beach College Promise is proof that when schools and colleges work together, higher-education graduation rates improve,” said O’Donnell, who serves as chair of the Assembly Education Committee. “The California College Promise ensures districts across the state have the necessary tools to create similar pathways and increase college success.”
The bill now moves on to the Assembly Appropriations Committee.
