A traffic accident this week resulted in the death of one driver and serious injury of another.
On Monday, May 23, around 11:15pm, Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) officers were dispatched to the intersection of Carson Street and Clark Avenue regarding an injury traffic collision.
When officers arrived, they located one driver who had been ejected from his vehicle and sustained major head trauma and a second driver having sustained major body trauma. Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded and transported both drivers to local hospitals. Shortly thereafter, the ejected driver was pronounced deceased.
The preliminary investigation revealed a 1994 GMC pickup, being driven by a 21-year-old resident of Lakewood, was traveling southbound on Clark Avenue and approaching Carson Street at a high rate of speed. According to an independent witness, the driver failed to stop for a red light and was struck in the intersection by a 2006 Hyundai Tucson traveling westbound on Carson Street on a green light. The Hyundai was being driven by a 67-year-old resident of Lakewood. As a result of the collision, the GMC pickup slid sideways toward the southwest corner of Carson Street and Clark Avenue, collided with the south curb and a fire hydrant, and then flipped onto its passenger side, ejecting the driver in the process. The driver had not been wearing his seatbelt. After the initial collision, the Hyundai rolled towards the southwest corner of Clark Avenue and Carson Street, where it came to a stop against the south curb. The driver of the Hyundai is listed in stable condition.
