The City of Long Beach will celebrate local Olympians with a parade on Saturday, Sept. 15. The parade route starts in Belmont Shore at 2pm. Gold medalists Misty May-Treanor and Jessica Hardy will be among the athletes present that day, and other Long Beach Olympians have been confirming their attendance daily, according to the City of Long Beach.
“We are delighted to host this parade in honor of our Olympians who competed in London as well as those who participated in past Olympics,” said Mayor Bob Foster. “This is going to be a great event for the entire city of Long Beach.”
The Long Beach Parade of Olympians will start at the intersection of Second Street and Livingston Drive. Athletes will head east down Second Street, turn south at Bay Shore Avenue towards Ocean Boulevard, and then head west along Ocean Boulevard to the Belmont Plaza Pool, where the parade will conclude.
Parade goers should look for a spot on the south side of Second Street, or either side of Bay Shore Avenue for the best viewing opportunities. Immediately following the parade, community members are invited to “meet and greet” Long Beach’s Olympic athletes at McKenna’s on the Bay, 190 North Marina Dr.
Long Beach streets will not be closed for the parade. The City’s Police Department will clear a path for the parade, and cars will be allowed through once the parade has passed.
Bay Shore Avenue is still closed to vehicles for the summer season. Parking is available at metered spots or public beach lots along Ocean Boulevard.
