The Paramount Elks Club is hosting its 51st Annual Deep-Pit BBQ on Saturday at 8108 East Alondra Boulevard in Paramount.
The barbeque, which started in 1956 as a fundraising project for the club’s California Major Project to disabled kids suffering from cerebral palsy, has grown into the organization’s largest fundraiser.
“Proceeds from the event go towards scholarships, funding for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and the Special Olympics,” said Elks Office Manager Debbie Baldwin.
The meal will be prepared in a 6-foot, fire-resistant pit that will start cooking the meat the night before up until 3 pm Saturday. Along with the beef from the deep-pit barbeque, the menu will also include beans, bread, tortillas, and 40 turkeys along with water, wine, and what Paramount Elks state is “the coldest beer in town.” The event is estimated to have enough food to serve over 1800 guests.
Activities to follow the dinner include live music, a raffle of donated items, and a close-up look at fire trucks and police vehicles provided by the local police and fire department, who will also attend.
“It’s a nice event for people to come [to the lodge] and see what the Elks do,” said Baldwin.
The food will be served from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., and tickets are $8.50 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under. The pit is located on the corner of Alondra Boulevard and Orizaba Avenue across from the lodge.
