Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run near Sunnyside Cemetery; suspect sought

A 65-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run on Sunday, Oct. 17 near Sunnyside Cemetery. The motorist was being sought today.

The man was struck around 7 p.m. Sunday at Willow Street and Myrtle Avenue. The Long Beach Fire Department transported the man to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. 

In a preliminary investigation, detectives determined that the man was struck by a red sedan traveling eastbound on Willow Street. The pedestrian was crossing the street southbound in the unmarked crosswalk on Myrtle Avenue.

At approximately 7:51 p.m., officers from the Long Beach Police Department assisted the Signal Hill Police Department with the incident. 

“The red sedan fled the scene and did not return,” police said in a statement. “At this time, it is unknown if alcohol, drugs, or speed were a factor in this collision, and the investigation remains ongoing.”

The man’s identity is being withheld pending notification of relatives.
