During California Coastal Clean-up Day, the event in the Los Cerritos neighborhood drew a crowd of people to plant trees and remember the late environmentalist. Nearly 100 of Kawasaki’s friends attended the event to honor her by planting trees.
Some of those in attendance included: Fran Spivy Weber, board member of the California Water Resources Control Board; Geraldine Knatz, former executive director of the Port of Los Angeles; Long Beach Police Chief Jim McDonnell and Congressmember Alan Lowenthal.
The event was sponsored by the City of Long Beach Neighborhood Services and the Port of Long Beach.
“Lillian would have appreciated this event,” said Kawasaki’s husband, Craig Carter. “She was a big supporter of natural resource conservation, and she spent her whole life appreciating nature and educating the public how to preserve it.”
More than 100 trees were planted in the neighborhood while a Jacaranda tree was dedicated to Kawasaki in Los Cerritos Park.
“I am looking forward to picnics under this tree,” said Niki Tennant, a long-time friend and district director for State Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal. “Lillian was so full of energy and life. It is good to have somewhere to come and remember her.”
