As part of the City’s Peace Week activities, 6th District Long Beach City Councilmember Dee Andrews and the City of Long Beach Human Dignity Program have announced the “Visions of Peace Project.”
In an effort to lift the consciousness of the community about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy and principles, Councilmember Andrews, the Peace Week Committee, City of Long Beach Department of Health & Human Services, Long Beach Parks, Recreation & Marine, and the City of Long Beach Human Dignity Program are promoting more than a week of activities designed to unify the community.
The Visions of Peace Project is an opportunity for the community to express their vision of peace through the written word. Submissions are being accepted for poems and short stories.
“In this day and age we have many talented writers in our community and their expressions should be heard, especially if their works of art can end violence” , said Andrews said.
The poems and short stories will be displayed at the 25th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace & Unity Parade and Celebration on Jan. 19 as well as read throughout the event and at Peace Week events.
There will be a special reading on Jan. 16 at 6pm at Martin Luther King Jr. Park, 1950 Lemon Ave. for those sharing their vision of peace. All ages are encouraged to enter a submission. Those interested may email entries to teresa.gomez@longbeach.gov.
