Police, fire departments issue fireworks warning with Fourth of July holiday

Local police and fire departments are sending out warnings about the illegal use of fireworks in the area with the approach of the Fourth of July holiday.
Police will be present to ensure compliance and to remind citizens that fireworks, including “safe and sane” ones, are illegal in Long Beach, according to the Long Beach police and fire departments (LBPD, LBFD) and the Signal Hill Police Department (SHPD).
Officials recommended attending licensed fireworks shows conducted by professionals.
Those cited or arrested for fireworks violations may face a $1,000 fine, sentenced to jail for six months or both.
A few Southern California cities may allow the use of “safe and sane” fireworks; however, all fireworks are illegal in many of Los Angeles County’s 88 cities, which includes the city of Signal Hill, according to the SHPD.
If fires do occur, individuals may also be at risk of being charged with arson. Parents of children who cause damage or injuries using fireworks can also be held liable.
The fines and penalties may increase depending on the fireworks’ classification.
Fireworks can be disposed of at collection bins located at all fire stations, lifeguard headquarters, located at 2100 E. Ocean Blvd., or any police station.
Police officers will strictly enforce all laws, especially those associated with drinking in public, public intoxication, drunk driving, minors in possession of alcoholic beverages and underaged drinking, according to officials.
Officials also said that the use of personal barbecues in all city parks and beaches is prohibited. Use of permanent city-installed barbecues is acceptable.
All parks and beaches from Shoreline Drive to the end of the peninsula will be heavily patrolled.
Call Long Beach Police Dispatch at (562) 435-6711 or 911 to report dangerous or illegal activities.
