Long Beach families with youth on the autism spectrum can gain insight from experts, access resources and learn important information at a free upcoming event from local nonprofit Pools of Hope.
Pools of Hope (located at 6801 Long Beach Blvd.) offers several supportive services and wellness programs for people with autism, including aquatic therapy. Autism Acceptance Month, a 30-day celebration of neurodiversity and individuals with autism, is observed during April.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 36 children in the United States across all racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
“The upcoming event is an opportunity to provide families with critical resources and professional guidance while fostering understanding and awareness in our community,” said Patricia Dixon, Executive Director of Pools of Hope, in a public statement. “We are honored to host knowledgeable panelists and create a space for meaningful conversations and connections.”
The event will include an expert panel, with the following leaders and advocates in autism, special education and health equity taking part:
- Stacy McAlister – Executive Director of 5-Eleven Hoops
- Representatives from Harbor Regional Center
- Maricela de Rivera – Multicultural Health Equity Coordinator at the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services
- Bernadette Gonzalez – Director of Disabled Students Program and Services at Long Beach Community College
- Mieko Hester-Perez – Nationally recognized autism advocate, author and Pools of Hope board member
Topics to be addressed by the panel include:
- How to effectively navigate the special education (IEP/504) system
- Where to access vital autism and developmental services
- How parents can advocate for their loved ones
- How to build supportive community networks for long-term success
Attendees will also receive a complimentary copy of Hester-Perez’s book Mastering the Battlefield, a resourceful and educational guide for parents of special needs children.
This event is made possible with support from the Port of Long Beach.
The Autism Awareness Education event will take place Monday, April 14 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association (4321 Atlantic Ave.)
