The Port of Long Beach is offering funding to local nonprofits that are planning community events that can bring positive publicity to the port. Applications can be submitted throughout September.

This program provides money for events and activities that highlight the Port’s operations and community involvement. Eligible projects may focus on areas such as the arts, environment, education, social justice and historic preservation.

Applications will be accepted online until 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30. Only events scheduled after Dec. 1 are eligible. Applicants are encouraged to plan ahead, as proposals go through a review and recommendation process before being considered by the Port’s Board of Harbor Commissioners.

Applications are evaluated on their potential to help the Port present itself as an “environmental steward, economic engine and job creator,” according to a public statement by the Port. Events that offer opportunities for promotion, marketing and community engagement are prioritized.

The Port accepts sponsorship applications three times a year — January, May and September. During the last round in May, Harbor Commissioners approved 321 sponsorships totaling $968,700.
