The Port of Long Beach has opened applications for its Community Sponsorship Program, which provides funding for nonprofit organizations and community groups planning to hold events and programs that can be used to inform the public about the Port.

The sponsored events will focus on various themes including arts, environment, education, social justice and historic preservation.

Community groups can submit their sponsorship applications online until 5 p.m. on Friday, May 31.

Applicants are advised to submit their application well before they plan to hold an event or program due to the length of the application review process. Following the closure of the application period, there will be a 60-day period before the proposed sponsorships are presented to the Board of Harbor Commissioners for consideration and approval.

Events and projects scheduled for Aug. 1 and beyond are eligible for sponsorships from the May round of funding, while the September round of funding will consider events and projects taking place Dec. 1 and later.

Applications are evaluated based on how effectively the proposed events and activities will tell the public that the Port is an “economic engine and job creator,” according to a statement from the Port. In the most recent sponsorship call held in January, Harbor Commissioners granted a total of 220 community sponsorships amounting to $895,200.
