Okay, will someone please explain the thinking behind Southern California Edison’s new idea about giving a rate break to the people who use more power each month and charging more per unit to the people who conserve power or do without the comforts of an air conditioner or a fan to keep cool in the heat of summer?
This idea sounds just as dumb as the one that expects the people who have higher earnings and more money to pay higher taxes because they can afford it. Where is the logic here? My thought is: If you were fortunate enough to earn a lot of money in your lifetime, why has the government the right to tell you you must then pay more in taxes than the less fortunate do. Do we then tell the poor to use less electric power so they can subsidize the rich and tell the rich to use more power so they can save money and keep cool under their air conditioners? Why is my head spinning?
My thought: If you have it, use it as you desire. If you want to subsidize the less fortunate, that is your happiness in life and not the business of anyone else. If you want to build a bigger and better home, yacht or business, that should be your prerogative and joy of life and not the concern of the government.
Conversely: If, on the other hand, your lot in life hasn’t been one of wealth, why should you then do with even less so you can subsidize the electric power of the people who can afford to pay and keep cool in the summer under their air conditioners?
There must be a joke here somewhere. Will someone please tell me when to laugh?
