The Democratic Women’s Study Club of Long Beach (DWSC) will host its 83rd Annual Great American Picnic on Saturday, Aug. 8 at noon at Wardlow Park, 3457 Stanbridge Ave.
“Our annual picnic is a great opportunity for Democrats, both men and women, from all areas, ages and backgrounds to come together to discuss like-minded issues and celebrate the work we’ve done over the past year,” said DWSC President Herlinda Chico. “Next year will be an important election year, and it is vital that we continue to engage voters.”
This year’s event co-hosts are: Rep. Alan Lowenthal; Rep. Janice Hahn; Sen. Ricardo Lara; Sen. Isadore Hall; Asm. Patrick O’Donnell; Asm. Anthony Rendon; Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia; Long Beach Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal; Long Beach Councilmembers Lena Gonzalez, Suzie Price, Dee Andrews, Roberto Uranga, Al Austin and Rex Richardson; Hermosa Beach Mayor Nanette Barragan; LBCC Trustees Irma Archuleta and Sunny Zia; LBUSD Board Member Megan Kerr; WRD Board Member John Allen; California Democratic Party Regional Director Sergio Carrillo; Progressive Solutions Consulting; Crummitt and Associates; ILWU Local 13 President Bobby Olvera Jr.; Plumbers Local 78; and candidates for Council District 2 Eric Gray and Jeannine Pearce. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be generously donated and grilled by Long Beach Firefighters, Local 372.
“The Great American Picnic also serves as an opportunity to recognize an outstanding Democrat,” states a press release from DWSC. “This year we will surprise a long-time labor and party leader with a lifetime membership.”
Entry into the barbecue is $5 for non-members and $5 suggested donation for members. The cost of admisison to the event will be waived for those who join or renew their membership for $20 or have a financial hardship.
The DWSC of Long Beach is the oldest chartered Democratic Club west of the Mississippi River, founded more than 80 years ago, according to its organizers.
