Long Beach Special Events hosted the 2007 Plane Pull benefiting the Special Olympics of Southern California Saturday morning at the Long Beach Airport. The event brought in 18 teams of 20 to see which one could pull a 747 across 25 feet the fastest. Four teams were given prizes and bragging rights over their respective categories.
This event was brought about by the Southern California Law Enforcement Torch Run, the largest grass-roots fundraiser for Special Olympics Southern California.
“This is one of a continuous and ever-growing number of events hosted by the Law Enforcement Torch Run to support our area programs, said Southern California Law Enforcement President and CEO Bill Shumard. “We appreciate all the local support we have received during this event, in particular Long Beach Airport, FedEx and the other businesses that have contributed to make this event a success.
UPS was not only a sponsor in the event, they were a participant and provided their own aircraft to use in the pull.
Sergeant Adam Christin of the California Highway Patrol acted as master of ceremonies, and teams that participated in the event were LAUSD, State Patrol, US Bank, and Team SOSC Long Beach, among others. A few members of the Seal Beach Police Department assisted the Special Olympic athletes with their pull.
In the end though, the winners were FedEx LAX for the Corporate Champion Division, CTIP for the law enforcement division and they also won an award for most creative team T-shirt, and US Bank for slowest team pull.
