Zorro presents a romanticized version of life during the Rancho period. Join Long Beach Unified School District history professors Tim Keirn and Dave Neumann as they examine how the rancho period is traditionally taught in the 4th grade, historicize the romanticized version of rancho life, and contrast it with the everyday reality on local ranchos.
An Evening with Zorro

Unmask the mythical “Robin Hood” of early California, elevated to worldwide legend through television and film. Explore Zorro’s origins and escapades through mini-lectures and memorabilia, examine his portrayal in movies and publications, and enjoy a fencing demonstration. A prize will be awarded for the best costume, so attendees are encouraged to consider going as the masked swordsman himself or another citizen of early California.
