The City of Long Beach is warning residents and businesses not to fall victim to a scam involving a telephoned threat of utility service termination unless a payment is made immediately.
Utilities always contact customers in writing about payments or service changes, according to the City. In this scam, a person who claims to work for a utility calls people and warns them that their account is seriously past due, and either power, gas or water service will be terminated unless the person immediately goes to a payment station to make a payment following specific instructions.
Those who have questions about utility billing should call (562) 570-5700. Those who suspect wrongdoing or possible criminal activity should call 9-1-1.
