Just in time for summer, the Recreation Park Playground will reopen on June 14 with new dinosaur-themed playground equipment.
The playground will feature a new seating area near the facility, separate structures for age appropriate groups and ADA accessibility improvements.
The new playground was built with $1.9 million of funds from Measure A, a voter-approved sales tax that helps fund “public infrastructure and public safety services,” according to the city’s website.
Accessibility features include a board of 15 different American Sign Language phrases for children to communicate with those who are not hearing. Some phrases include “monkey bars,” “pretend,” “slide” and “game.”
“The inspiration behind the sign language board was a result of direct stakeholder feedback and discussions with the disability access community,” said Project Manager Charlene Angsuco.
The playground includes a slightly smaller structure designed for children ages 2 to 5 years old, and a larger structure for older kids to play on, with monkey bars and a wall of rope to climb on.
Construction began on the playground in November 2021 and was originally expected to be complete by March 22, 2022. According to Angsuco, the delay was due to a backlog of playground equipment from the company GameTime, which didn’t deliver the equipment until past March.
Now that the facility is nearly ready, the Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine and Public Works will host a grand reopening for the public on Tuesday, June 14 at 1 p.m.
Recreation Park Playground is located at 4900 E. 7th Street.
