Got an old bike taking up space in the garage? Have the kids outgrown their bikes? Give those bikes a second life by donating them to Long Beach youth through the Recycle Your Bicycle Program.
In celebration of National Bike Month, the City of Long Beach, Waste Management, and the H.U.B. Bike Co-op are launching the Recycle Your Bicycle Program to collect and refurbish bikes, and then redistribute them to local youth- an opportunity to clean out the garage, help out local youth and recycle all at the same time.
Starting Saturday, May 22, and continuing for the following three Saturdays (May 29, June 5, and June 12), residents can bring bicycles in any condition for donation from noon to 4 pm to the following five city park community centers:
• El Dorado Park West,
800 Studebaker Rd.
• Houghton Park, 6301 Myrtle Ave.
• Cesar Chavez Park,
401 Golden Ave.
• McBride Park,1550 Martin Luther King Ave.
• Silverado Park, 1545 W. 31st St.
Bikes in salvageable condition will be repaired by the local bike community nonprofit H.U.B Bike Co-op through its mentorship program and then redistributed to local youth throughout the community to promote a more healthy, active, and sustainable community. Bikes beyond repair will be recycled as scrap metal by Waste Management. In addition, the H.U.B. Bike Co-op is seeking volunteer bike mechanics to assist with bike repairs. Those interested in volunteering should email the H.U.B at pedalmovement@gmail.com.
