The American Red Cross Greater Long Beach Chapter last week announced the release of its new Wilderness and Remote First Aid course, which is designed for scouts, outdoor enthusiasts and people who work in remote wilderness environments. The course will be taught Saturday, June 26 and Sunday, June 27 at Progress Park, 15500 Downey Ave., in Paramount. Participants are asked to wear relaxed, comfortable clothes that can get dirty.
“The new Wilderness and Remote First Aid course fills a real need in our community,” said Red Cross spokesperson Margaret Arbini-Madonna.
“We all know immediate care can help save lives and prevent serious injuries, and this course is a great way to help protect people who spend time outdoors for work or play.”
The new 16-hour course gives people the skills needed to respond to an emergency when help may be delayed. The course includes training on:
• Head (brain), neck and spinal injuries
• Heat-related emergencies
• Hypothermia
• Altitude-related illnesses
• Allergies and anaphylaxis
• Burns
• Bone and joint injuries
• Wounds and wound infection
“The Wilderness and Remote First Aid course offers flexibility to adapt the course to varying environments,” said Arbini-Madonna. “Plus, major portions of the course are taught outdoors to ensure participants are prepared to respond in those settings.”
The course is based on the Boy Scouts of America Wilderness First Aid Curriculum and Doctrine Guidelines and has been reviewed and/or supported by the American Camp Association, American Canoe Association, National Recreation and Park Association, and JCC Association.
Course participants must be at least 14 years of age and possess current certification in adult CPR/AED.
