Regional Occupational Program fosters green careers

As the public continues its ongoing quest to “think green,” Long Beach Unified School District’s Regional Occupational Program (ROP) is offering two classes that are a perfect match for those seeking an ecology-minded career.

• Landscape Floral Occupations
This course provides the student with both classroom instruction and workplace experience in the landscape installation, plant production and floral design fields. Throughout this course, students are exposed to foundational life and physical science concepts having direct application to the horticulture industry.
This course introduces the proper use and care of a variety of hand tools and power machines common to the horticulture industry. Student training sites include retail and wholesale nurseries, parks, gardens, and florist shops.
Two semesters of this class provide one semester credit in Life Science, Physical Science, or SSC 3-4 credit.
• Sports Turf
Students receive training in the construction and maintenance of sports facilities. The class will instruct students in lawn care and turf production, golf course management, sports turf and turf irrigation and equipment and maintenance. This course will utilize the community classroom and/or cooperative vocational education models.
The Regional Occupational Program classes take place at 3701 E. Willow Street. For more information, call (562) 426-6846 or visit www.lbusd.k12.ca.us/rop.
