Registration will soon open for the City’s adaptive youth and adult recreation programs, weekly in-person lessons and activities that will cover subjects such as art, fitness and games for persons with mental and physical disabilities.
The A.R.I.S.E. (Adaptive Recreation in a Special Environment) program is designed to help people with disabilities “develop physical fitness, build courage and learn valuable and social life skills,” according to the program’s website. They also prioritize relationship building, which is encouraged by the weekly meetings.
The programs are divided into two sections—one for teenagers between the ages of 12 and 17 and one for adults older than 18. The adult program will take place weekdays from 2 to 5 p.m. and cost $15 weekly, while the youth program will take place Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and cost $4 weekly.
Lessons will be offered by the Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) Department, in order to provide “fun and enriching experiences” for people with disabilities, according to a statement from the city.
