Roller derby league seeking female skaters

Roller derby picThe recently formed Long Beach Roller Derby League is seeking women interested in participating in any capacity. There are spots for both skating and non-skating.
Roller derby is a fast-paced, high-energy sport played on an oval track with two teams on quad (four-wheel) skates. Each team has five players on the track at a time, four blockers and one jammer. The object is to move your jammer past the other team’s blockers while the other team tries to do the same, all while skating quickly around the track.
The blockers may block the opposing jammers by hitting them with their shoulders or hips. They also can assist their own jammers by whipping them forward. One point is scored for each opposing blocker who is passed. The game is enhanced by the players’ adopting campy alter-ego names such as “Ida Capitate” and “Estro Jen,” as well as with fun uniforms.
The league is looking for players, referees, scorekeepers, mascots, cheerleaders and local businesses who would like to sponsor or sell goods in a vendor village at the events. Skaters must be female, over 18, and have insurance.
