Rotary Club of Signal Hill to distribute free school supplies this Friday

The Rotary Club of Signal Hill will distribute free school supplies to 400 students at Alvarado Elementary this Friday, Sept. 3 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The supplies will include pre-packaged supply kits including paper, notebooks, pencils, colored pencils, glue and other materials to prepare students for the new school year. The Long Beach Unified School District began classes on Tuesday, Aug. 31.

The school supply giveaway is an annual event for the rotary club, which was started by longtime members and Signal Hill residents Bob Long and his late wife Nancy. The two initially funded the program themselves, said Signal Hill Rotary Club President Albert Chang.

“They realized there was a need in the community, especially among students, that did not have access to school supplies,” Chang said.

This year, the club received grant funding from Rotary District 5320 and Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn for the event. The Rotary Club of Signal Hill is part of Rotary International, a service organization focused on philanthropy and goodwill.
