Safe and free summertime programs for Long Beach youth

Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine has announced its lineup of free and affordable summer recreation programs for local children and teens, kicking off Monday, June 16. 

The following free programs, which are part of the City’s Summer of Opportunity initiative, will take place through Aug. 22: 

Summer Fun Days – For children ages 5 to 12, this free drop-in program invites kids to enjoy supervised sports, games, arts and crafts and special events. Summer Fun Days will be held on weekdays from noon to 5 p.m. at 22 Long Beach parks. Though attendees may come and go at their own discretion, pre-registration is required at program locations, which can be found on the Summer Fun Days webpage

Be S.A.F.E. (Summer Activities in a Friendly Environment) – This program will offer free recreation activities at 11 Long Beach parks on weekdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Residents can explore arts and crafts, games, sports, science activities and special events, including cultural celebrations, plus movie screenings sponsored by the Port of the Long Beach. Mobile Recess Program – Children ages 5 through 14 years old can take part in physical fitness and arts and craft activities on blocked-off neighborhood streets around Long Beach Monday through Friday. All supplies and materials for games and crafts will be provided. Participants can register at Mobile Recess locations during their operating hours, on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration will close once a program reaches capacity. 

The program’s days, times and locations are:

  • Mondays and Wednesdays: 
    • 10 a.m. to noon at Admiral Kidd Park (2125 Santa Fe Ave.)
    • 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Grace Park (361 E. Plymouth St.)
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays:
    • 10 a.m. to noon at Drake Park (951 Maine Ave.)
    • 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Rose Park (Eighth Street and Orizaba Avenue)
  • Fridays will be at a different location each week and announced at lbparks.org
