The city of San Pedro will host its 21st “Taste” event to highlight its restaurants, entertainers and historical landmarks.
On Saturday and Sunday, August 1 and 2, the 21st Annual “Taste in San Pedro” will take place on the grounds of scenic Pt. Fermin Park, overlooking the Pacific Ocean with views of the coastline and Catalina at its closest point to the mainland.
More than two dozen restaurants, along with a variety of California winemakers, will be participating. Entertainers will perform throughout the day, and an area will be set aside for youngsters, with food and amusement designed especially for them. Saturday night will feature a leading musical group.
The “Taste” is only one of several happy discoveries for visitors. San Pedro abounds in fascinating surprises. Housed in the ferry-building on the main channel of the Port of Los Angeles, the Maritime Museum features historic models and stories of ocean-going vessels. The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium offers a close-up look at the natural wonders of the sea. The lovingly restored SS Lane Victory, a 1940s Victory ship that served several generations is berthed nearby, inviting tours. Boat and helicopter tours of this working port operate from Ports O’Call Village. The new promenade enables visitors to view this working port while enjoying the comfortable and attractive surroundings.
The Muller House contains a collection of items conveying the visitor back in time. The Fort MacArthur Military Museum sits on the point of the peninsula. Its bunkers and gun emplacements guarded these shores during World War II. On this location also stands the Korean Friendship Bell, a decorated pagoda-like monument presented to the United States from a grateful South Korean government.
Another delightful attraction now operates along a 1.5-mile route of San Pedro’s harbor. A fully restored 1911 Pacific Electric Red Car, along with Red Car replicas built by the Port of Los Angeles, carries riders for the first time in more than 40 years anywhere in Los Angeles.
