‘Say Cheese’ photographers display more than 250 best images at one-day exhibit on 2nd Street

More than 110 amateur and professional photographers joined Justin Rudd’s 24-hour digital photo contest this past weekend. Photographers spent Saturday, Jan. 5 and Sunday, Jan. 6 capturing life as they saw it within the city limits of Long Beach. The contest was presented by Rudd’s nonprofit Community Action Team (CAT).
Each entrant has already submitted five or six of their best images taken during the 24-hour period and they will be judged this week by a panel of Long Beach-area photojournalists. More than 250 of the best images will be featured at a free, outdoor exhibit from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12 in front of Washington Mutual Bank, located at 5200 East 2nd Street in Belmont Shore.
The exhibit, sponsored by Epson America, Inc., will feature at least one photo from each contestant. A reception for the photographers will take place from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. that day and the awards will be announced at 5 p.m. The photographer of each of the top 10 images will receive $100 from CAT and the best photo prize is $150. Winning images will be featured at www.JustinRudd.com after Saturday’s exhibit and next week at Arbor at the Bay on 2nd Street.
The result of the contest is an intricate composite of photos with fresh perspectives on Long Beach. The subjects of the images were at the discretion of the photographer.
“We want everyone to see an eclectic mix of photographers with a varied range of photos from a wide variety of places in our city…from the mundane to the artsy,” said Rudd.
The contest’s mission was to capture, in a single day, images of Long Beach that celebrate this vast, vivid, vibrant city. It gave participants a chance to explore their creative, humorous or serious side to create a blended expression of the community.
