The office of 8th District Councilmember Al Austin will again co-host a series of “Second Sundays in the Village” events this summer, beginning on Sunday, June 8 and continuing on July 13 and August 10.
Second Sundays in the Village kicked off last June and is a free monthly community event organized in partnership between Austin and the Virginia Village Business Association. The family-friendly event serves to highlight the revitalized Long Beach Boulevard corridor in north Long Beach while fostering a stronger partnership between the neighborhoods and the local businesses, according to the 8th District office.
The first Second Sundays event of the summer will take place from 3pm to 6pm on June 8 on Long Beach Boulevard between 53rd and 56th streets, which is a business corridor in north Long Beach.
“Second Sundays in the Village is the product of a partnership with the businesses on Long Beach Boulevard,” Austin said. “We are building on last summer’s success in continuing what we hope will be an annual tradition.”
The event will feature artists and musicians in local businesses and along Long Beach Boulevard. There will also be free snow cones provided by the Port of Long Beach, a kids’ zone, as well as community resources and local merchant discounts.
Virginia Village derives its name from the history of the area, which was known as Virginia City before it was annexed by the City of Long Beach in 1924.
In the last several years, the City of Long Beach and its former redevelopment agency invested more than $5 million in streetscape improvements along the Long Beach Boulevard corridor between Del Amo Boulevard and 56th Street. This work included repaving the street, new medians and landscaping, façade improvements, new pedestrian lighting and bus shelters, and the creation of a pedestrian paseo. The public parking lot at Long Beach Boulevard and Market Street was also landscaped and repaved with an environmentally friendly porous asphalt.
June’s event is co-sponsored by Austin, Long Beach Airport, the Port of Long Beach, Cultural Alliance Long Beach and the Virginia Village Business Association.
