More than 5,000 books have been saved from the recycle bins by PBI, a printing firm in Signal Hill, that had manufactured the books then donated them to the Signal Hill Public Library.
The library then donated more than 500 of those books to Miller Children’s Hospital in Long Beach. The brand new books will be used throughout the hospital, available to both patients and their families.
“We’re so grateful that the children get to benefit from someone’s thoughtfulness,” said Susan Marks, a registered nurse at the Bickerstaff Pediatric Family Center at Miller Children’s Hospital. “The fact that these books are brand-new makes it that much better.”
Miller received books ranging from children’s K-12 with subjects including fiction, educational, health and parenting books for the adults. Some of the books donated are those by Beatrix Potter, The Brightest Star and the I Wonder Why… series.
