Officers from the Signal Hill Police Department (SHPD) arrested two suspects from Los Angeles Tuesday for various crimes related to mail theft, according to SHPD.
On Oct. 28, at approximately 4am, members from the SHPD’s Detective Bureau were conducting surveillance in the 2200 block of Ohio Avenue as a result of ongoing mail theft that has occurred in the city since last May.
During the surveillance, a maroon Chevy Equinox stopped in the middle of the street, and two occupants exited the vehicle. The female driver walked to a cluster mailbox located in front of a condominium complex. She then used a screwdriver to pry open the four mailboxes to access the contents inside, according to police. As she was committing the theft, the male passenger stood by the vehicle and acted as the lookout, police said.
After the two suspects drove out of the area, officers inspected the mailboxes and confirmed that they had been tampered with. Officers stopped the suspects’ vehicle a short distance away, and mail belonging to a Signal Hill resident was located inside the vehicle. In the trunk of the vehicle were three packages that had been purchased by means of identity theft, according to the SHPD.
Both suspects from Los Angeles were arrested. The investigation is ongoing.
