Signal Hill is observing national Older Americans Month, meaning seniors can attend a variety of fun workshops and events catered to them. The month aims to recognize the contributions of older adults, and to honor the importance of aging in our society.
The Senior Social Club will host a variety of events to spotlight older Americans, from light exercising and classic games to a memoir-style writing workshop.
The city will also be raising the Older Americans flag on Tuesday, May 6 in front of City Hall (2175 Cherry Ave.). Most events will take place at the Signal Hill Public Library (1800 E. Hill St.), and some require advanced registration.

All events listed are free.
Friday, May 9 – 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Senior Social Club will host a Mother’s Day bingo and luncheon at the Signal Hill Public Library.
Monday, May 12 – 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. At this craft workshop, seniors can make a braided ribbon lei in the Signal Public Library’s Community Room. Registration for this event is now open, and can be made by calling 562-989-7330.
Monday, May 12 – 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Anyone 14 years or older can attend this “Write Your Life Story” workshop at the Signal Hill Public Library, and learn the tools to capture events and experiences in their lives and turn it into non-fiction writing. This workshop is led by Dr. Kelley “Kiwi” Gillaspy, and requires registration by calling 562-989-7330.
Tuesday, May 20 – 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. At Silver Sneakers events hosted by the Senior Social Club, seniors can get in some light, low-impact exercising as well as socialize with their neighbors at the Signal Hill Public Library. This strength and stretch class aims to improve overall flexibility and body musculature with exercise bands. Seniors can work at their own level either standing or in a chair. Yoga mats are recommended, but some exercises can be done seated. Registration is required by calling 562-989-7330.

Friday, May 23 – 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Grandparents are welcome to bring their children and grandchildren for a night of bingo, with prizes and snacks available at the Signal Hill Public Library. Space is limited, and registration is required by calling 562-989-7330.
Wednesday, May 28 – 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This “Day at the Movies” event will feature a discussion with historian Theo Siegel and a screening of the 1967 film “The Graduate” at the Signal Hill Public Library. Light refreshments will be served, and registration is provided by calling 562-989-7330.
Saturday, May 31 – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This all-ages Community Resources and Health Fair at Signal Hill Park (2175 Cherry Ave.) will spotlight medical and community resources, healthy lifestyle tips and booths and workshops, along with activities, giveaways and refreshments.
Additionally, every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to noon at the Signal Hill Public Library will be a game-filled gathering for seniors, in the following schedule:
