Signal Hill gallery to exhibit photographs taken with disposable cameras by orphans in India

The nonprofit art gallery Greenly Art Space in Signal Hill will host an exhibit entitled Everyday Joy, which is a collection of photos taken by orphans in India using disposable cameras. The exhibit will open with a reception on Saturday, Aug. 25 from 7pm to 9pm.
Artist and gallery owner Kimberly Hocking is intrigued by the use of art as a tool for contemplation and has created numerous projects with communities of service around the world to this end. “Participants contemplate an idea like joy through taking photographs that bring the concept into focus,” she said. “At the art show opening, viewers continue the contemplation process by reflecting on the images and the meaning of the concept of joy in their own lives. These photographs remind us of the simple pleasures that can bring us joy— jumping rope with a friend, climbing a tree, eating a meal— and call us as individuals toward gratitude and joy in our own lives.”

In partnership with Marty Whitecotton and a team from the Crossing Church in Costa Mesa, children from the Bethel Church Orphanage in the city of Katihar (through Compassion International) and from the Servlife India Orphanage in the city of Raxaul were given disposable cameras to capture images of joy.
After the opening, the exhibit can be viewed by appointment or during regular gallery hours of Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 11am to 2pm, through Sept. 21. Greenly Art Space is located at 2698 Junipero Ave., Suite 113.
