Signal Hill Public Library returns with annual Summer Reading Program

The Signal Hill Public Library will run its annual Summer Reading Program from June 16 through Aug. 19 and offer residents badges and prizes for reading and completing other tasks. 

Residents can sign up for the reading program through the website Beanstack, a software that allows someone to track their books and enter them to win prizes. One family can sign up using the same email. 

Participants must read 30 books in order to complete the reading challenge. 

Children can earn a badge when they: 

  • Read a book or listen to an e-book
  • Listen to a book or audiobook 
  • Attend a library program 

Teens and adults can earn a badge when they: 

  • Read a physical or digital book 
  • Read a graphic novel or manga 
  • Attend a library program 
  • Read a magazine or digital magazine 
  • Read your favorite book from childhood 
  • Sing your favorite song

The library also announced a list of events it will hold throughout the summer: 

Saturday, June 17: Find Your Voice Like a Ventriloquist from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Open to all ages. 

Monday, June 19: Family Bingo from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Open to all ages. 

Saturday, June 24: L.A. County Smart Gardening from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Ages 12 and older. 

Wednesday, June 28: Pokémon 3D Printing from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Ages 5 and older. 

Saturday, July 8: Science: Bubble-ology 101 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Open to all ages. 

Wednesday, July 12: Fabulous Faces: Face Painting at the Library! Open to all ages. 

Saturday, July 15: Llama Llama Storytime from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Ages 5 and older. 

Wednesday, July 19: Make IT: Gilded Edge Agate Coasters from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Ages 16 and older. 

Thursday, July 20: Signal Hill Superhero Day from noon to 8 p.m. Open to all ages. 

Saturday, July 22: Kids Paint Workshop: Black Panther from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Ages 8 and older. 

Friday, July 28: Great Stuffed Animal Sleepover from 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Ages 5 and older. 

Thursday, Aug. 3: Cioppino with Chef Ollies from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Ages 16 and older. 

Saturday, Aug. 5: Psychic Buster from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Open to all ages. 

Thursday, Aug. 10 : Kids Sing-Along and Karaoke from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Ages 3 and older. 

Saturday, Aug. 12: Fish Printing (Gyotaku) from noon to 1:30 p.m. Ages 5 and older. 

Wednesday, Aug. 16: Make IT: STEM Ice Cream from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Open to all ages. 

Saturday, Aug. 19: Insects Rock! From noon to 1 p.m. Open to all ages.
