Volunteers from the Rotary Club of Signal Hill and local residents have been packing over 2,100 back-to-school supply bags at the Signal Hill Police Department. The program started 13 years ago with donations from Robert Long and Nancy Long, longtime Signal Hill residents and past Rotary presidents.
This year, the Rotary Club of Signal Hill partnered with the Long Fund to donate over $20,000 in school supplies with donations from Rotary District 5320, the Signal Hill Police Officers Association, Prophet Bolden— a child actor on ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat— Costco, and Aleshire and Wynder.
The packs of school supplies include: binders, composition books, ruled paper, graph paper, scissors, rulers, pencil sharpeners, colored pencils/crayons, folders, glue sticks and erasers. Costco donated over 400 backpacks.
EDCO waste-management company also donated 25 recycling containers for backpack storage and distribution to students.
This week, the backpacks are being delivered to all Signal Hill students in grades K-8, which includes 2,300 kids, according to Signal Hill Vice Mayor Lori Woods.
President Robert Mendoza adopted the school-supply project as his club’s community service project and secured a grant from Rotary District 5320.
