The Signal Hill City Council welcomed the City’s newest police chief during its Tuesday, July 11 meeting.

Police Chief Wayne Byerley worked for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office for over 30 years in numerous roles before going on to work as a captain for the Los Alamitos Police Department.

Byerley was officially sworn in at a ceremony around two weeks ago, during which his son was the first to pin his Signal Hill police badge on Byerley.

Signal Hill operated without a permanent police chief after the former one, Christopher Nunley, retired in 2021. After Nunley’s retirement, Signal Hill hired two interim police chiefs who served from 2021 to 2023.

“It’s been a great journey to be the chief of police here,” Byerley said. “I’m just honored.”

Byerley spoke about how he had attended the City’s Pride flag raising as well as the memorial event for Ron Settles, during his first weeks in office.

“I like the way this city does business,” Byerley said.

Byerley said he talked to the Signal Hill Police Foundation about providing free steering wheel locks to residents at the upcoming National Night Out event, which will be available to residents at the event while supplies last.
