St. Mary Medical Center appoints new vice president and COO

Dignity Health St. Mary Medical Center (SMMC) has appointed Dr. Ardel Guillamas Avelino as the new vice president and chief operating officer (COO), the center announced earlier this month. 

Avelino will oversee the hospital’s daily operations, execute its strategic plan and work with CEO Carolyn Caldwell to plan and carry out initiatives and growth for the hospital. 

The nonprofit hospital opened in 1923 and will celebrate its 100th year anniversary this summer with numerous events. The hospital holds 389 beds and provides acute care with a level II trauma center, cardiac and vascular center, surgical weight loss, maternity and CARE Center which provides PrEP. 

“With more than two decades of healthcare and leadership experience, Ardel’s knowledge and background will help us to advance our operational excellence and ensure the continued growth and financial strength of our facility,” shares Carolyn Caldwell, President and Chief Executive Officer. 

Avelino holds DNP, MHA, RN and PHN degrees and joined the hospital in 2002 as a nurse in the intensive care unit (ICU). He has also worked as a mentor and advocate for nurses, oversaw the implementation of key projects at the hospital and “demonstrated excellent oversight of patient care and quality management initiatives,” according to a press release from SMMC.

Outside of the hospital, Avelino has served as the chairman of the Board of Trustees for Goodwill Southern Los Angeles County.
