St. Mary Medical Center will host a fall-prevention summit in its John Parr Health Enhancement Center, 1050 Linden Ave., on Wednesday, Jan. 29 from 8am to 10am.
Senior advocacy groups, service providers and emergency responders are invited to join the new Community Fall Prevention Leadership Group and attend the Falls Summit.
The Heart of Ida, a local nonprofit funded by the State Department of Public Health to study falls among older adults in Long Beach, will co-sponsor the summit, a community-wide strategy session to reduce first and subsequent falls among those over the age of 65.
One in three older adults will experience a fall each year, according to a press release issued by St. Mary. In Long Beach, this means more than 14,000 older adults will fall in 2014. The first fall is an important wake-up call, and, if the cause of the first fall is not addressed, there is great risk of a subsequent fall, according to St. Mary.
