As the summer season approaches, the Signal Hill Police Department would like to encourage parents and guardians to review and discuss the following safety tips so that everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer break.
Barbecue safety
• Propane and charcoal barbecue grills should only be used outdoors
• Place grills away from the home, deck railings and low-hanging tree branches
• Keep children and pets away from the grill area
• Never leave your grill unattended
• Only use charcoal starter fluid, and do not add any other flammable fluids to the fire.
• Allow the coals to completely cool before disposing of them in a metal container.
Pool safety
• Teach children how to swim.
• Do not swim alone, and teach children to not go near water without an adult present.
• Remind children to jump into the water with their feet first to check the depth of the water before diving into it.
• Do not dive into the shallow end of a pool.
• Know how to perform CPR on children and adults.
Camping safety
• Pack foods in tight, waterproof bags or containers. Keep them in an insulated cooler.
• Cook foods to proper temperatures. Keep raw foods separate from cooked foods.
• Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water to avoid heat-related illnesses.
• Wear protective gear, including sunscreen and bug repellant.
• Avoid poisonous plants and wild animals.
Drought safety
• Conserve water, repair leaks, and install water-efficient appliances.
• Water your lawn sparingly.
• Trim dry grass, vegetation, and trees near your home and avoid using flammable materials, especially fireworks, around areas containing dry brush.
• Teach kids to never play with matches, gasoline, lighter fluid, or lighters.
Fireworks safety
• Parents are liable for any damage or injuries caused by their children using fireworks.
• All fireworks, including “safe and sane,” are illegal in Signal Hill and Long Beach.
• Families should attend community fireworks displays run by professionals.
