If you like the happy, carnival sound of a steel drum band, mark your calendar for Saturday and plan to attend this fun-filled annual event at Reservoir Park. The festival is open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and includes games, crafts, food and a prize drawing–all for free. You can even sign up for steel drum lessons right on the spot.
Larry Mebust, president of Hopetown Music and proprietor of the Steel Drum Shop in Signal Hill, announced this year’s Family Festival will be spiced up by a performance by the student Steel Drum Band from East Whittier Middle School. The band is lead by Jennifer Keser and is rehearsing hard for its performance.
The anchor band for the event is Steel Parade, the well-known, high-energy pan ensemble group led by Phil Carrillo. Steel Parade rocks the Southern California beach club and park concert scene all year when they are not touring.
Come early, and bring lawn chairs and a hat. The music starts at 1 p.m. sharp with Steel Parade and continues non-stop until 4 p.m. The drawing will include a complete steel drum outfit from the Steel Drum Shop. The free, Family Festival at Reservoir Park is an annual event put on by the Friends of Signal Hill Cultural Arts under the leadership of Sue Hughes, the Community Services Supervisor for the city of Signal Hill.
