‘Summer on Pine’ promises pedestrian takeover in Downtown Long Beach

Downtown Long Beach (DTLB) Alliance and District One Councilmember Mary Zendejas will host a two week-long summer event series on Pine Avenue between Broadway and Third Street. 

Residents can enjoy fitness activities, roller skating, live music and more with five free activities that encourage car-free fun during “Summer on Pine.”

 “Our goal with this street closure is to reimagine urban spaces as dynamic places where the community can come together, celebrate, and thrive,” said Austin Metoyer, President and CEO of the DTLB Alliance in a public statement. “These events not only foster a sense of belonging and unity but also contribute to the economic vitality and cultural richness of our city. We’re excited to see Pine Avenue filled with life and energy.”

The following free events will be held on Pine Avenue between Saturday, Aug. 24 and Saturday, Sept. 7 as part of “Summer on Pine:” 

  • Big Gay Pine Ave Takeover  – Saturday, Aug. 24 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. This epic party from Be Proud will feature live music, carnival games, shopping, drag performances and much more. 
  • Pop Sunset: A CommUNITY Wellness Y Sustainability FestWednesday, Aug. 28 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. This evening festival will focus on health and wellness with fitness classes, sustainable cuisine, holistic health tips and eco-friendly shopping. 
  • Roller DiscoThursday, Aug. 29 and Thursday, Sept. 5 – Pine Avenue will serve as the skating rink for the DTLB Roller Disco, open to skaters of all skill levels. 
  • Ascend on Pine Friday, Sept. 6 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. – LB Living and Playalarga Events are hosting this Burning Man-esque where house music, art, dancing, and eccentric expressions are encouraged. 
  • Viva Long BeachSaturday, Sept. 7 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Grey LB Productions is celebrating the first Saturday of Latino Heritage Month with a stacked live music lineup and plenty of food and drinks for attendees to explore. 

“This street closure represents more than just events—they symbolize the strength, diversity, and creativity of our community,” said Zendejas in a public statement. “I’m thrilled to see our streets transformed into spaces where everyone can come together and celebrate what makes Long Beach so special. This is a wonderful opportunity for residents to connect, for local businesses to thrive, and for our district to shine.”
