The Long Beach Public Library has another item to add to residents’ summer bucket lists: read every day.
The library will launch its annual summer reading program on June 18, which will run until Aug. 13.
The all-ages challenge invites readers to “Read Beyond the Beaten Path” by exploring new books, completing activities and enjoying free special events at their local libraries.
These events will include musical performances, magic shows, wildlife encounters and more. For teens and adults, the library will host STEM workshops, book talks and other programs. A full calendar of special events is available online at www.longbeach.gov/library/events.
The summer reading program encourages participants to read five days a week for at least six weeks, earning incentive prizes along the way.
“Our summer reading program is a great way for families to maintain a routine of reading at home, which is key for students returning to school in the fall,” said Acting Library Director Christine Hertzel. “By offering special event performances, prizes and activity ideas, we’re encouraging families to read, learn and explore together all summer long.”
To celebrate the launch of this year’s reading program, each library location will host a music performance during the first week of the program, June 21 to 24, courtesy of the Music Center of Los Angeles’ Art Grown program.
Performers include INCA the Peruvian Ensemble, DIAVOLO/Architecture in Motion, Chameleons Mime Theatre, and Boxtales, among others.
Those interested in participating can sign up online starting June 18, or in person at their local library starting June 21.
