Talent contest encourages open discussion of healthcare reform

The League of Women Voters is featuring a talent contest for youth ages 5 to 18 on Saturday, Aug. 14, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 5450 East Atherton Street in Long Beach. The program will feature youth performances in rap/spoken word, song, poetry and art using healthcare reform issues as content.
Contest winners will receive a $25 cash prize plus a TV interview with spoken word artist J. Walker and a DVD of their interview and TV performance. Call (562) 432-5822 to become a youth contestant.
Businesses, organizations and individuals are encouraged to become sponsors. Sponsors who contribute one or more of the $25 cash prizes will present them to the contest winners at the Aug. 4 event and also be interviewed with the contest winner at the TV taping on Wednesday, Aug. 8 at 3 p.m. at Charter Communications in Long Beach. Sponsors should call (562) 432-5822 to sign up.
The League project’s goal is to bring youth and the community together in a format comfortable for youth. The League is using this milieu to address their concern about healthcare reform in a creative way.
Dr. Sherif Emil, assistant professor of pediatric surgery at University Children’s Hospital at UCI Medical Center and on staff at Miller Children’s Hospital in Long Beach will be the featured speaker to kick off both the talent contest and the TV program.
