Ten last minute Mother’s Day plans in Long Beach

Don’t feel bad if Mother’s Day crept up this year. Instead, choose from this list of last-minute-friendly plans throughout Long Beach to celebrate Mother’s Day without breaking the budget. 

From nature outings, community markets and festivals, to custom jewelry and sunset sailing, mom can have a good time and unwind no matter what her interests are. To top off any of these plans, choose a small business to purchase a beautiful bouquet of flowers from, such as Long Beach’s Farm Lot 59 or Signal Hill Florist

Friday, May 9 

DIY Bouquets – 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.: Willow Springs Park is having a Mother’s Day edition of their Restoration Fridays, where mothers and daughters can come make a bouquet with the invasive (yet beautiful) flowers they remove to make room for native plants. Visitors should bring sun protection, comfortable shoes and a reusable water bottle. Parking is available at 2745 Orange Ave. This event is free. 

Saturday, May 10 

Floral Design Workshop – 10 a.m. to noon: Enjoy a morning of creativity, color and beauty at Farm Lot 59’s annual floral design workshop. Pay the farm a visit during peak flower season for this hands-on workshop and tutorial, a perfect opportunity to slow down, enjoy nature and make a beautiful arrangement from the many fresh flowers available. 

  • Tickets are $105 per person, and include a vase to take your arrangement home, a tour of the farm, a refreshing beverage and a snack from a local chef. Tickets can be purchased online. Farm Lot 59 is located at 2714 California Ave. 

Mother’s Day Festival – 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.: The Parkview Village Shops will host this Second Saturdays sidewalk block party with 40 local vendors, food trucks, refreshments and snacks, games, activities and entertainment at 5423 E. Village Road. Free to attend.

Mother’s Day Community Market: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Plantiitas Plant Shop is throwing this Mother’s Day community market where families can shop from various local vendors and search for their next plant gem. Those who arrive at the shop early Saturday or Sunday will receive a free 2-inch plant while supplies last. Plantiitas is located at 2011 E. Fourth St. Free to attend. 

Mother’s Day Market – Noon to 5 p.m.: The 714 Market will host this special edition of their markets at the LBX Hangar, featuring 55 local makers, a live DJ, a floral workshop and bloom bar, a trucker hat bar, a Mother’s Day photo op, pet portraits, face painting and food and drinks from the local restaurants. Families and pets are welcome at this free market. The Hangar is located at 4150 McGowen St. Free to attend. 

Jewelry Specials – Noon to 6 p.m.: This two-day event at ForeverLinkX is making it easier to spoil mothers with specials on forever jewelry (necklaces or bracelets that you can’t take off), a $5 charm bar, custom engravings, a custom hat bar and pastries. The first five customers will receive flowers and a free coffee. ForeverLinkX’s Long Beach location is at 455 E. Ocean Blvd. Free to attend.

Sunday, May 11

Mother’s Day Brunch Buffet – 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.: This special brunch at Compound’s Union kitchen caters to every taste bud and creative soul, with a wide range of food and drink pairings as well as multiple crafting stations and a DJ set by Bonnie Holiday. Savory brunch options include made-to-order omelets, ribeye with all the fixings and Union’s famous Kaya toast and pork bao buns. Little ones can enjoy brunch staples like pancakes, pastries and parfaits, and there’s plenty of dessert options. Moms can also enjoy mimosas or mocktails, as each ticket comes with one complimentary drink. 

  • Adult tickets cost $75, children 9 and older cost $45 and children 8 and under cost $25. First seating begins at 10:30 a.m. with last call at 12:15 p.m. and second seating begins at 1 p.m. with last call at 2:45 p.m. 
  • Visitors can also take photos with Aura Queen of Hearts, build their own bouquets with Xylem Florals or more DIY Mother’s Day cards. These activities come with their own cost set by the vendor. Compound is located at 1395 Coronado Ave. 

Brunch and Dinner Options at Cafe Sevilla – Select times between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. Downtown Long Beach’s Cafe Sevilla is offering three options for a Mother’s Day brunch or dinner, all with live entertainment and a complimentary glass of champagne. Brunch begins at 10 a.m. with a Latin guitar show between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. 

  • The Flamenco and Champagne Brunch Show begins at noon, and includes a two-part flamenco performance and three-course Spanish brunch for $85 per person. 
  • The Flamenco and Champagne Dinner Show begins at 4:30 p.m., and includes a two-part flamenco performance and a three-course Spanish dinner, as well as a complimentary lobster tail for $95 per person. 

Mother’s Day Wine Tasting – Noon to 4 p.m.: This cozy wine tasting led by Marie Delbarry offers a relaxing way to end Mother’s Day weekend at Sala Coffee and Wine. Guests can purchase three wine pours for $25 or opt for mimosas. The brunch menu will also be available. Sala Coffee and Wine is located at 3853 Atlantic Ave. 

Sunset Sail – 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.: Enjoy sweet treats and a view of the sunset along a peaceful ship ride hosted by the Los Angeles Maritime Institute Topsail Youth School. The ship will leave from the Pine Avenue Pier in Long Beach at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $60 for adults and $30 for children.
