Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro will kick off 2008 with the debut of the provocative South Bay theatre company The Relevant Stage and their inaugural production “Acts of Desperation,” which premieres Jan. 31.
Conceived by founder and artistic director Ray Buffer, “Acts of Desperation” stars Adam Roa, Rita Meerson, Victor Kelso, and Roberta McMillan, among others. The show is directed by Lucas Pakes.
Comprised of two acts, the multimedia presentation tells two stories: that of a young female pushed toward suicide by three teen girls and that of a boy full of murderous rage who becomes a school shooter. Both stories emphasize the consequences of each teen’s actions in a “moving, mesmerizing and poignant reflection on what it is like to be a teen in today’s world.”
“Acts of Desperation” includes a shortened version of the documentary Rats & Bullies by Roberta McMillan combined with William Mastosimone’s play “Bang Bang, You’re Dead.” Through each story are woven original modern dance pieces created by Cynthia and Patrick David Bradley of the San Pedro City Ballet.
Performances are from Thursday, Jan. 31 to Sunday, Feb 3. All performances are at 7 p.m., except for Sunday’s performance which begins at 1 p.m. “Acts of Desperation” is not recommended for audiences younger than 12 years of age and parental discretion is advised.
The cost of tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students and Seniors ages 65 and older and $5 for children ages 18 and under. Reservations are also available for schools and youth groups wishing to view a free matinee Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.
